Well the Canon AIPP APPA's are over for another year ...and as usual too much good food, good drink and of course great company.
Four judging rooms were set up at the 2013 Digital Show for the AIPP to have some 3000 images judged over three days for the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA) . We (as professional photographers) submit up to four images, and these are judged by some of the top Professional Photographers from around Australia and New Zealand. To say it's nerve-wracking watching your images judged by a panel of five leaders of your profession is an understatement. The standard this year was higher than ever - and seeing the first few Award prints go up on display never fails to make your heart sink just that little bit... how the hell do you compete with this...! (is what I said in my head, but with slightly stronger language : )
Well I'm happy (and relieved) to report I held my own... came away with a Gold, two Silver Distinctions and a Silver Award, all in the Portrait Category. This also secured me enough points to receive my Master of Photography with the AIPP, which is a great achievement within the industry. I've told the kids they have to call me Master now - but I'm pretty sure this won't last long.
Congratulations go to all the other WA crew who received great scores, their Masters or Associateships - and especially to WA's Greg Hocking who received his Grand Master of Photography and Tony Hewitt who took out the entire thing, 2013 Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year. Ridiculous. The winners of all the categories and their scarily good images can be found HERE.
Here are the four images I entered and there respective scores;
